There doesn’t seem to be any difference, as far as I can tell when you compare their web specs, other than that there is a “diagnostic utility” included with the newer model and that it has a slightly modified outward design. The WD My Passport Essential SE is the name for the 2011 models (series: WDBACXxxxxxxx) and is available in a 500GB, 750GB and 1TB only. I had the same question and here is what i found: The WD My Passport portable is the the shorter name for 2012 models(series: WDBxxxxxxxxxx) and are equiped with 500MB up to 2TB hard drives. What is the difference between extern hard drive “My Passport” and extern hard drive “My Passport essential SE” ?
